Exporting mangoes from Kenya involves several requirements to ensure the produce meets international standards. Here are the key steps and requirements:

Registration and Certification

  1. Supplier Registration: Mango suppliers must register with the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) to operate legally. This ensures compliance with national, regional, and international food safety and quality standards.
  2. Export Permit: Exporters need to obtain an export permit from the AFA. This involves submitting an application and providing details about the consignment.
  3. Inspection: Mango consignments must undergo physical inspection by the AFA to ensure they meet quality standards. Exporters should apply for inspection through the AFA’s email and provide the location of the pack house. No alt text provided for this image

Treatment and Standards

  1. Temperature Treatment: Mangoes exported to certain markets, such as the European Union (EU), must undergo temperature treatment (vapour heat treatment or hot water treatment) to eliminate pests. This is a requirement for accessing these markets.
  2. Phytosanitary Certification: Mangoes must be certified as pest-free by the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS). This involves adhering to the Kenya mango certification protocol.
  3. Traceability: Exporters must provide traceability information for all consignments to ensure the produce can be tracked from farm to market.

Market Access

  1. Middle East Market: Kenya exports fresh mangoes mainly to the Middle East. Ensuring compliance with the importing countries’ regulations is crucial for successful exports.
  2. European Union (EU): The EU has approved the importation of temperature-treated mangoes from Kenya, opening up a significant market. Exporters must meet the EU’s stringent quality and safety standards.
  3. Processed Mangoes: Small quantities of dried mangoes are exported to countries like the Netherlands, UK, and Italy.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Pest Infestation: Mangoes are susceptible to pests like fruit flies. Implementing integrated pest management practices and adhering to treatment protocols can help mitigate this issue.
  • Market Access: Establishing connections with registered suppliers and exporters can streamline the export process and ensure timely payment for produce.
