MAKUENI COUNTY EXPORTS MANGO WORTH OVER KES. 300 MILLION

Makueni county is the leading producer of mango in Kenya with over 4 million trees. However, farmers have been loosing on the produce due to pests and low producer prices.

To enhance market opportunties, the county has established a low pest Zone of 8000 Ha in 18 major mango producing wards. This iniative has led to opening up of export market opportunities and hence improved producer prices.

During the ongoing mango harvesting season which began in September 2024, the county has dispatched 202 of 40ft refrigerated containers with 4907 Metric Tonnes of mango to UAE & UK. The dispatches were made at the Packhouses in the 3 licensed packhouses in Kibwezi, Wote and Emali

While acknowledging the success of this program, H.E the Governor, Mutula Kilonzo Jr said its a new dawn for Makueni mango farmers. He committed that the county will grow the mango export markets by training farmers to comply to international standards and developing the packhouse infrastructure to serve not only mango, but also citrus fruits, Avocado and vegetables.
