Embu farmers receive hybrid goats worth Sh2.3 million

Farmers from the semi-arid area of Makima Ward, Embu County, have a reason to smile after receiving Galla hybrid goats worth Sh2.3 million from the County Government.

The 178 goats that included 162 does and 16 bucks are expected to assist the farmers from the drought-stricken area in diversifying sources of income as well as enhancing food security in the area.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of agriculture, John Nyaga, said the goats were well suited for the area owing to their resilience to harsh climate conditions.

He said these improved breeds are also resistant to opportunistic diseases, mature fast, yield more milk, and have more meat compared to local breeds, thus providing quicker incomes to herders.

Speaking while overseeing the distribution at Makima Town on Friday, Nyaga said they will give the farmers training on efficient management of the goats, including vaccination and deworming schedules, to ensure they bring maximum returns to farmers.

He reported that since last year, the devolved unit has distributed 672 such goats to the tune of Sh14 million to farmers across the county.

“Our aim is to grab any opportunity that can be of benefit to our farmers, and with these goats, we hope to improve not only their incomes but also nutrition through milk, which is very nutritious,” he said.

He called on farmers not to sell the goats but to keep them since they will be of more value to them in the future than the little they may get by selling them.

Beneficiaries expressed optimism that the goats will turn around their financial fortunes.

“I am happy today; I have received a hybrid goat, and I am sure in a few years’ time, I will own a herd,” said farmer Elizabeth Mweni.
