Government and KALRO Launch Distribution of Certified Pyrethrum Seedlings to Revitalize Kenya’s Pyrethrum Sector

In a significant boost to Kenya’s pyrethrum sector, farmers from Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nyandarua, and West Pokot counties are set to receive high-quality, disease-free pyrethrum planting materials. The distribution initiative was officially launched today in Molo Sub-county, Nakuru County, marking a pivotal step in revitalizing pyrethrum farming and enhancing agricultural productivity in the region.

The clean planting materials, developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) Industrial Crops Research Centre in Molo, are expected to empower farmers, increase yields, and drive the commercialization of pyrethrum—a crop historically vital to Kenya’s economy.

Significance of the Initiative

1. Boosting Farmer Productivity

The distribution of certified disease-free seedlings ensures that farmers have access to high-yielding varieties, reducing losses caused by pests and diseases. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance pyrethrum production, improving both quality and quantity.

2. Economic Empowerment & Job Creation

Pyrethrum farming was once a major economic driver in Kenya, particularly in the Rift Valley region. By reintroducing high-quality planting materials, this program aims to:

  • Restore farmer incomes by increasing marketable yields.

  • Create employment opportunities along the pyrethrum value chain, from farming to processing and export.

  • Strengthen Kenya’s position in the global pyrethrum market, where demand for natural pyrethrin (used in organic pesticides) remains high.

3. Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships

The collaboration between county governments, KALRO, and national leadership demonstrates a unified approach to agricultural development. Such partnerships are crucial in ensuring:

  • Sustainable farming practices through research-backed solutions.

  • Access to markets by linking farmers with processors and exporters.

  • Policy support to address challenges such as pricing, subsidies, and value addition.

Next Steps & Future Prospects

The distribution of seedlings is just the first phase of a broader strategy to revive pyrethrum farming. Key focus areas include:

  • Farmer training programs on best agronomic practices.

  • Expanding processing facilities to add value locally.

  • Exploring international markets to secure better prices for farmers.

The launch of this initiative marks a turning point for pyrethrum farmers in Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nyandarua, and West Pokot counties. By providing high-quality, disease-free planting materials, the government and research institutions are laying the foundation for a thriving pyrethrum sector.
