Kenyan Farmers Set to Benefit from New Drought-Resistant Maize Hybrid, DH09

A breakthrough in maize breeding is set to revolutionize food security in Kenya’s drought-prone regions. The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) in partnership with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) has launched DH09, a drought-resistant maize hybrid specifically bred for arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).

Key Features of DH09:

  • Matures in 85–95 days, compared to the conventional 110-day varieties
  • Yields up to 3.5 tons per acre under dry conditions
  • High resistance to Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) and common leaf blights
  • Excellent adaptability to Eastern and Northern Kenya

The release comes at a crucial time when climate change is severely affecting rain-fed agriculture. With over 80% of Kenya’s landmass being ASAL, DH09 promises improved food self-sufficiency.

Distribution and Seed Access:

  • Certified DH09 seeds will be available by June 2025 through accredited agro-dealers
  • Smallholders to receive 50,000 starter packs under government climate-resilience programs
  • Extension officers will be deployed for on-farm demonstrations and training sessions
  • This hybrid is a direct response to farmer feedback and climate resilience research. Farmers are urged to consult their local extension officers to understand proper planting, spacing, and fertilization practices specific to DH09.
