In a major move to resurrect Kenya’s once-vibrant cotton sector, the government has rolled out a strategic plan involving the distribution of certified cotton seeds, revitalization of rural ginneries, and facilitation of ready markets for smallholder farmers. This initiative aims to shift cotton from a neglected crop to a viable cash crop, especially in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
Certified Cotton Seed Rollout:
The Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), has launched a new batch of certified Bt cotton seeds, which offer resistance to bollworms and require fewer pesticide applications.
- 2.5 million seed packets are being distributed in Busia, Kitui, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Makueni counties
- Smallholder farmers to receive starter seed kits and extension support
- Targeted yield: 2,000 kg per acre, up from the current 300-500 kg
KARLO has also developed non-GMO cotton varieties suitable for organic markets, widening the market reach for Kenyan cotton.
Ginneries and Market Linkages:
To complement the seed program, the government is investing in the refurbishment of 16 cotton ginneries through public-private partnerships.
- New ginning equipment to reduce post-harvest losses
- Improved lint quality to attract textile manufacturers and export buyers
- Revival of rural economies through job creation and value addition
Cotton farming also supports the textile and apparel industry, a key pillar under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Economic Impact for Farmers:
- Guaranteed off-take through the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC)
- Potential income increase from KES 15/kg to KES 52/kg of cotton
- Intercropping with legumes to improve soil fertility and food security
By focusing on seed quality, value chain infrastructure, and policy incentives, the revival of cotton farming is poised to uplift thousands of farmers and contribute to national economic goals.
