Uasin Gishu empowers residents with modern beehives

Uasin Gishu county is rolling out key initiatives at the grassroots to empower residents through sustainable livelihoods while promoting climate-resilient practices.

Implemented through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, the activities have marked a major milestone in Kipsomba Ward, with the official handover of 220 modern beehives together with 22 complete harvesting kits to local cooperative societies.

Mary Goreti, Member of County Assembly (MCA) for the area, who presided over the event alongside key officials from the Climate Change Unit and the Department of Water, lauded the beekeeping initiative as a practical economic empowerment tool for local communities.

“I urge all beneficiaries to take this opportunity seriously and maximise the benefits of beekeeping as a livelihood venture. Honey production is not only profitable but also environmentally friendly,” said Goreti.

The MCA further launched a series of additional empowerment programmes, aimed at uplifting youth and community-based groups.

This included the distribution of motorcycles, tents, chairs, incubators, and other tools targeting youth groups and members of boda boda Saccos.

Eng. Christopher Mbevi, the Climate Change Unit Officer in charge of Soy Sub-County, emphasised the critical role played by bees in supporting climate action.

“Bees are not just honey producers. They are vital pollinators that contribute significantly to biodiversity, food security, and climate resilience. Supporting beekeeping is an investment in both livelihoods and environmental health,” he said.

Later in the day, Eng. Mbevi, accompanied by Soy Water Engineer Ms. Benadys Chelagat and Senior Design Eng. Henry Kendagor, toured the ongoing works at the Mobet Dam Safety infrastructure improvement project.

The team inspected key enhancements, including the upgrading of the spillway, the laying of gabions to prevent erosion, and road improvements around the dam site.

The contractor was already mobilised on the ground, and the engineers expressed satisfaction with the progress of work.

Meanwhile, the combination of livelihood support and infrastructure development underscores Governor Jonathan Bii’s commitment to community-driven climate adaptation and sustainable economic growth.
