Narok Launches Subsidised FMD Vaccination Drive to Safeguard Livestock

Key Highlights

  • Narok County Government rolls out subsidised Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme.
  • The initiative aims to protect animals, boost productivity, and unlock access to international markets.
  • The move builds on the county’s success in crop farming, where farmers received over 350,000 subsidised fertiliser bags during the long rains.
  • Livestock farmers will now benefit from similar government-backed support.
  • Vaccination coverage will target all key livestock-keeping areas in Narok.
  • The goal is to cut losses from disease outbreaks and improve household incomes.

Livestock farmers in Narok County are set for a major boost following the launch of a subsidised Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme. The initiative, announced by Deputy Governor Tamalinye Koech, seeks to protect herds from the devastating disease while positioning farmers to tap into international markets that require strict health standards.

“This is more than just a vaccination campaign. It is an investment in our people, our economy, and our future. Let us ensure no farmer is left behind,” Koech said during the announcement.

The Deputy Governor highlighted the county’s determination to extend the kind of support crop farmers have enjoyed to the livestock sector. Earlier this year, the administration distributed over 350,000 bags of subsidised fertiliser during the long rains, with another 100,000 bags expected during the short rainy season.

“Animal rearing is the backbone of many households in Narok. Strengthening this sector means strengthening our people’s livelihoods,” he added.

The vaccination programme will cover all major livestock-keeping areas within the county. Officials say the plan is to curb losses caused by FMD outbreaks, ensure healthier herds, and ultimately improve incomes for pastoralist families.

By prioritising animal health, Narok hopes to cement its position as a leading livestock hub while helping farmers compete in both domestic and international markets.
