Farmers in Migori County have received a major financial injection following the launch of a Ksh 57.4 million program co-funded by the county government and the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

The initiative, which spans all 40 wards in the county, will channel funds through 40 SACCOs engaged in key agricultural value chains including local chicken, dairy, tomatoes, beekeeping, and bananas.

According to Reuben Opiyo, the County Program Coordinator for NAVCDP, the SACCO-centered model is intended to encourage a collaborative approach to food production, an approach still relatively new in Migori and the wider Nyanza region.

NAVCDP, currently running in 34 counties nationwide, aims to enhance agricultural value chains, improve productivity, and raise farmer incomes.

Local farmers welcomed the funding with optimism, noting that the group-based financing structure will enable them to expand operations, increase yields, and strengthen household livelihoods.

Speaking at the grant disbursement event in Kuria East, Migori Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko reiterated his administration’s commitment to grassroots agricultural development.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of economic growth in our county. We will continue to stand with our farmers and support them in scaling up food production,” Governor Ayacko said.

The county government expects the program to unlock greater resilience in farming communities and spur rural economic growth in the coming years.
