Elgeyo Marakwet to Distribute 13 Tonnes of Iron-Rich Nyota Beans to 6,500 Vulnerable Households

Elgeyo Marakwet to Distribute 13 Tonnes of Iron-Rich Nyota Beans to 6,500 Vulnerable Households

6,500 vulnerable households in Elgeyo Marakwet County will receive 13 tonnes of iron-rich Nyota bean seeds. The distribution aims to fight malnutrition while boosting household incomes in one of the county’s most food-insecure regions.

Governor Wisley Rotich officially flagged off the exercise at Chesoi Sub-County offices in Sambirir Ward, Marakwet East Sub-County. The seeds target farmers in areas hardest hit by malnutrition.

The initiative falls under the REACTS-IN programme. It forms part of the county government’s wider strategy to improve nutrition and empower local communities economically.

Targeting the Most Vulnerable

Governor Rotich highlighted the programme’s focus on those most in need.

“Today we have flagged off 13 tonnes of iron-rich Nyota bean seeds for distribution to farmers in Marakwet East. This programme targets 6,500 vulnerable households, including persons living with disabilities, expectant mothers and the elderly,” Rotich said.

The Nyota bean variety is high in iron and zinc. It matures faster than traditional beans and performs well in the varied soils and altitudes of the Kerio Valley and highland areas. Farmers can intercrop it with maize, helping improve both food security and soil fertility.

Addressing Malnutrition in Marakwet East

Marakwet East Sub-County records some of the highest rates of stunting and micronutrient deficiencies in Elgeyo Marakwet. Poor diets, limited access to diverse foods, and challenging terrain contribute to the problem.

The iron-rich beans are expected to enhance dietary diversity. Once harvested, the crop will provide nutritious food for families and surplus for sale at local markets.

The 13 tonnes of seed will cover substantial acreage. County agriculture officers will guide beneficiaries on proper planting, spacing, and crop management to achieve good yields.

Broader Strategy for Nutrition and Income

The REACTS-IN programme integrates nutrition-sensitive agriculture with economic empowerment. It complements other county efforts such as kitchen gardening, livestock support, and school feeding initiatives.

Governor Rotich’s administration has prioritised agriculture as a tool for poverty reduction. Similar seed distributions in previous seasons have helped smallholders increase production and incomes.

Beneficiaries will also receive training on post-harvest handling and simple value addition. This ensures they maximise returns from the crop.

Next Steps for Farmers

Distribution has begun in Marakwet East and will extend to other vulnerable wards. Agriculture extension officers will monitor planting and provide ongoing technical support throughout the season.

As the long rains continue, officials expect strong germination and establishment of the Nyota beans. Successful implementation could significantly reduce malnutrition indicators while putting extra income into the pockets of vulnerable families.

This targeted intervention demonstrates how climate-resilient, nutrient-dense crops can address both immediate food needs and long-term economic development in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
