Government Pesticide Drive Offers Relief to Yatta Cotton Farmers Amid Rising Pest Pressure

Cotton farmers in Yatta Sub-County have received a boost after the government rolled out a pesticide distribution programme aimed at curbing rising pest infestations threatening crop yields in the region.

The intervention, implemented through agriculture extension structures in collaboration with national and county authorities, targets smallholder cotton growers who have been grappling with increased outbreaks of bollworms and other destructive pests during the current production season. Officials say the programme is part of ongoing efforts to revive cotton farming as a viable commercial enterprise in lower eastern Kenya.

Agriculture officers overseeing the distribution noted that timely pest control remains critical for maintaining lint quality and improving overall productivity. They explained that many farmers had reported significant crop stress in recent weeks, largely attributed to irregular rainfall patterns that have created favorable conditions for pest proliferation.

The pesticide support package includes approved crop protection chemicals and accompanying advisory services on safe application, dosage and integrated pest management practices. Extension officers have also been deployed to train farmers on early detection of pest damage and sustainable spraying schedules to minimize production costs while maximizing effectiveness.

Farmers in Yatta welcomed the intervention, saying it would help salvage crops that were already showing signs of damage. Many smallholders in the area depend on cotton as a key cash crop alongside maize and livestock production, with market prices and yield stability directly affecting household incomes.

Agricultural officials emphasized that the programme is not only focused on immediate pest control but also on strengthening long-term cotton value chain recovery. The initiative comes at a time when the government is seeking to scale up domestic textile production by increasing raw cotton supply to local ginneries and agro-processing industries. Strengthening the cotton sector is viewed as a strategic priority under broader agricultural industrialization plans aimed at boosting rural incomes and creating employment opportunities.

Extension officers have urged farmers to adhere strictly to recommended pesticide use guidelines to avoid chemical resistance and environmental risks. They also encouraged continued monitoring of fields to ensure early intervention in case of further pest resurgence.
